I am currently working on two projects that will result in books in the not too distant future.
A. The Moral Decline of God: How Extreme Religion Destroys Spiritual
Values.
The theme of this book follows on directly from the point at which my book Is God a Terrorist? draws to a close. The Moral Decline of God presents a critique of how organised Christianity has so often failed to control the extremists and fanatics in its midst. This new book examines the way in which the spiritual ideals of the Judaeo-Christian tradition have so easily been distorted, perverted and degraded by those who lead organised religion through the ages. The main focus of the book is on Christianity, but there is also a section examining Islam, and the difficulty the Western outlook has in comprehending the values and ethics of Muslims. Over the course of the text the upheavals of the Medieval Crusades are examined, along with the witch-hunts, the Inquisition and the Reformation. The book closes by examining the way in which the arrival of modernity set the scene for the religious fundamentalism that plagues the world today.
The Moral Decline of God is scheduled for publication in 2008.
B. Worthless Gods, Empty Freedoms: The Failure of Liberal Values in British
Society.
This book develops a critique of the permissive liberal political, intellectual, and social culture of contemporary Britain. The context is the current ‘yob’ society that dominates our streets, and the support of the British Government in the ‘war on terror’. The issues are approached by critically examining the development of liberal democracy and liberal individualism in Britain, the US, and in France. The main argument of the book is that what we now have in terms of our political, social and moral arrangements in society represents a distortion, perversion and debasement of classical liberal values, as envisioned by some of the greatest thinkers of the Enlightenment.
Worthless Gods, Empty Freedoms will be published sometime in 2008 or 2009.
